The perfect environment can provide relaxation, healing, and the comfort to let you be yourself. One of the best ways to achieve this is by surrounding yourself with things you love! The MANGA ART ROOM at BOOK HOTEL in Jimbocho has volumes of manga, art panels, and even a private sauna to help you escape reality, recharge, and feel inspired while continuing your journey in Tokyo.

Tokyo Otaku Mode was invited to stay overnight in the MANGA ART ROOM, and here’s why we believe it’s a unique experience to add to your Japan travel itinerary!

    The BOOK HOTEL in JIMBOCHO

The hotel is about a thirty second walk from Jimbocho Station, which allows for quick train access when traveling to tourist attractions in Tokyo like Akihabara, Tokyo Sky Tree, and Tokyo Dome City.

After completing check-in, you'll receive a couple pamphlets about BOOK HOTEL. There’s also a cute manga pamphlet that explains different aspects of the MANGA ART ROOM.

Opposite the check-in desk, you’ll find the hotel’s small lounge area. It’s filled with books, magazines, and a manga to read in your downtime. The BOOK HOTEL in Jimbocho was founded on the concepts of books and creating a serendipitous encounter with them. Many of the books are staff recommendations, and they range from popular to more niche picks. Hopefully, you’ll discover a new book to get lost in during your stay!

    About the MANGA ART ROOM

The first eleven floors are your standard room accommodations, but there’s still an emphasis on books. You’ll also find a selection of books within the rooms and on the shelves of each floor’s hallway.

The 12th floor is where you’ll find the MANGA ART ROOM, and its two rooms called the “White Cave” or “Black Cave”. Each room is arranged and themed around relaxing in the comfort of manga, with the primary difference being the color and layout of the rooms. Otherwise, they both include a range of manga to read, two double beds, and a private sauna room. Enter the “White Cave”.

The room’s walls and ceiling are completely white, which makes the rows of full color manga covers stand out. You really get to appreciate seeing them as art. One detail you’ll notice while browsing the different series is that each manga has a small note in Japanese and English introducing interesting aspects of the series. The art panels hanging around the room are another artistic highlight, and they lend to the room’s atmosphere with their natural black and white colors. You’We believe you’ll enjoy seeing the different artwork and the experience of discovering a new series when you stay in the MANGA ART ROOM!

The room’s double beds are separated by top and bottom, each with their own selection of manga around you. The most magical experience we had during our stay was waking up the next morning, looking around, and realizing how lucky we were to be surrounded by books.

While we have a room full of artwork and posters hanging up at home, they’re something to look at and not interact with. Actively picking up a book and choosing to read it, after a busy day, is a powerful choice that engages your mind and imagination. We’re glad the MANGA ART ROOM reminded us of that fact!

The room’s shower and bathroom facilities are another highlight. They allow you to peacefully enjoy a quick break before you shower or hop in the private sauna. This area, especially the sauna room, is perfect for relaxing, forgetting the time, and clearing your mind.

    Japan’s Book Town

Jimbocho is known for its abundance of old books, and it’s known as Japan’s “Book Town”. You’ll find a number of secondhand bookstores around BOOK HOTEL and along the streets adjacent to it, but the main selection of shops will be found on Suzuran Street. Each shop, sometimes centered around a certain genre or theme, has a variety of books, magazines, or manga to purchase. Jimbocho is also home to popular publishers like Shogakukan, who print “Frieren: Beyond Journey's End”, and Shueisha, who print “ONE PIECE”!

    Popular Places to Eat

While Jimbocho is famous for its old books, it’s also popularly known for curry and other gourmet foods! There are numerous restaurants located near BOOK HOTEL, and many of them have been featured on Japanese TV. Here’s a short list of restaurants and cafes that BOOK HOTEL recommend you try!

First, curry is a simple dish, but each restaurant has its own flavor and style of preparing it. Bondy has been a famous curry house in Jimbocho for years. They serve a European style of curry, and many people come to eat there throughout the day. The line of customers can make the wait time range from 30 minutes to an hour, or longer. We were lucky to eat there, and it was worth the wait!

For a traditional Japanese cafe, known as a “kissaten” in Japanese, check out Saboru 2. This style of cafe is known for its simple, at-home atmosphere and it thematically remains true to its 1950’s Showa era roots. They’re also known for their large servings of Japanese style spaghetti.

Next, there are a couple of cafes within a few minutes walk of BOOK HOTEL. If you’re looking to grab breakfast and head out on your travels early, you should visit Sakura Cafe. They open at 4:30 AM, which gives you plenty of time to eat, relax, and prepare for a day of travel.

Finally, you should visit the Book House Cafe. It’s only a few seconds from BOOK HOTEL and may provide light entertainment. This cafe is unique because it specializes in picture books, and they have a wide-range of events like talk sessions with authors, live music, and live readings!

MANGA ART HOTEL “BAKUROCHO” and “TOKYO”

We’d also like to briefly mention BOOK HOTEL’s other locations in Bakurocho and Tokyo. Both locations are called the MANGA ART HOTEL, and similar to the MANGA ART ROOM which we visited, they have an emphasis on surrounding yourself in the world of manga.

The MANGA ART HOTEL “Bakurocho”, focuses on group rooms with bunk beds. Stay together with ten to twelve of your friends or family members in one room.

If you’re traveling solo, check out the MANGA ART HOTEL “Tokyo”. You’ll stay in a capsule room that’s built into a bookshelf filled with manga. It’ll make for quite the unique experience!
