Japan holds numerous otaku-related events throughout the year, enticing anime and manga fans alike from all over the country and even around the world. The biggest and most popular of these is Comic Market (コミックマーケット), also known as Comiket (コミケ), which is held twice a year at Tokyo Big Sight. While comparable in size to US conventions like Anime Expo or Comic Con, Comiket isn’t quite the same. In Japan, it’s classified as a doujinshi sokubaikai (同人誌即売会) or doujinshi sales event.

Doujinshi (同人誌) are non-commercial self-published bound works. They often include comics, short stories, and art books. Although one hall for Comiket now houses booths for major companies like Good Smile Company and Bandai Namco selling event-exclusive merch, a separate hall contains doujin circles (同人サークル)—or “circles” for short—which are the groups or individuals selling doujinshi.

But did you know there’s more to doujinshi than just comics? Doujinban (同人版) is a catchall term for other works that might be found at these events. These include game software, drama CDs, music CDs, and other goods inspired by whatever anime, game, or character they’re into.

When attending a doujinshi event, fans of a particular circle or creator can get an event catalog to find their favorites easily. A lot of popular artists and writers in a fandom will often post their table number or circle name if they are participating in an event. In fact, sometimes even the original artists and writers of a commercially well-known series will form a circle to participate.

People who’ve been to artist alleys and dealers rooms at conventions in other countries might find this familiar. Is doujinshi basically like fanart? Technically, yes, since it’s fan-created work that’s derived from existing IPs. However, due to strict copyright laws in Japan, selling fan-made works like commissions and non-official merch are not allowed. So how do doujinshi events work?

Some events have doujinshi for VTubers and cosplayers

Doujinshi events are the only spaces where fans can sell their own work inspired by a series. But the caveat is that the makers of the work cannot make a profit from sales. That’s why a lot of doujinshi tend to have low prices and similar pricing as the money they earn would just be enough to cover costs like event registration and production fees. And while anime conventions in other countries allow attendees to roam around in cosplay, that’s not the case at most doujinshi events. At large ones like Comiket, cosplayers must register in order to dress up, and they have to follow guidelines like no cosplay during the commute to the venue. Smaller events strictly prohibit cosplay and only focus on selling doujinshi.

Doujinshi events can cover all kinds of works with some only allowing certain genres or series

Depending on the size and organizer of a doujinshi event, though, only certain types of doujin goods may be allowed. For example, some might only allow printed doujinshi and not handmade goods like keychains or stickers. Events labeled “all genre” (オールジャンル) are open to any fandom, while an “only event” (オンリーイベント) is for a specific genre or series. Fans of popular titles like Haikyu!!, the Fate series, and various 2D idol franchises can expect to find at least one event focused on those IPs. But even a lesser known series could have an only event, just not as often or as big as other doujinshi events. And even though it’s easier to attend comic markets in big cities like Tokyo and Osaka, some organizers still hold events in other parts of Japan.

Doujinshi events aren’t all limited to derivative works, though. Some events like Comitia (コミティア) focus entirely on original creations: manga, posters, keychains, music, etc. While you won’t find goods with your favorite characters at these events, they’re a great opportunity to discover entirely unique works by independent artists.

So next time you plan to visit Japan, be sure to check out what doujinshi events are happening during your trip! They’re a great way to support artists and creators who make fanwork for your favorite anime and to meet other fans. Comiket is held every summer and winter and smaller doujin events happen almost every month. Major events often have ticket info available in English on their websites while others might require some understanding of Japanese, though it is advisable to know a bit of the language or have a way to translate, especially if you plan on buying stuff.

“Limited edition.”

For many collectors, this phrase can stir up a lot of hype around a new release because of how rare and special it is. But today we’re not talking about merch drops. We’re covering gentei shōhin (限定商品) which translates to limited edition or exclusive products. Specifically, we’re exploring kisetsu gentei (季節限定) products—seasonal exclusives that highlight flavors and produce across the four seasons in Japan—starting with the best of spring and summer.

Sakura is the epitome of springtime exclusive. A lot of restaurants and food businesses promote cherry blossom-inspired items starting as early as February up until early April, with many focused on desserts and drinks. However, those who enjoy traditional Japanese sweets can look forward to a seasonal type of snack called sakura mochi around this time. This traditional snack differs depending on the region with Kansai-style using glutinous rice while Kanto-style has a more crepe-like wrapper. But both are filled with a bean paste known as anko (あんこ) and covered with pickled sakura leaves. Aside from food, be on the look out for other sakura-themed goods and souvenirs available during this time, too!

Although Japanese supermarkets stock strawberries as early as December, the fruit’s peak happens around the same time as sakura season. Because of this, many limited time products are usually pink and incorporate both cherry blossoms and strawberries in their recipes or packaging. But for anyone looking to try the ultra sweet Amaou variety, it’s usually available in the late winter or early spring so plan your trip accordingly.

Matcha is pretty much a year-round product in Japan and it’s pretty easy to find no matter the season. However, springtime marks the first matcha harvests of the year so many companies will commemorate this time by releasing special matcha-flavored products. Bakeries and cafes will put out all kinds of matcha-flavored creations. And since it matches the taste profile of strawberries and sakura as well as their visual aesthetics, it’s possible to find dessert buffets that use all these flavors at once.

Around May to July, melon flavors start taking the stage to mark the shift from spring to summer. If you’re looking for a taste of Japanese melons, keep an eye out for hotel or cafe menus that offer afternoon tea sets around this time. But in order to have a taste of the real thing, it’s best to find them at a supermarket. Melons at depachika (デパ地下), or food courts found at department store basements, tend to be more expensive—moreso if you’re hoping to try the luxury muskmelon varietal known as the Crown Melon or the highly-prized Yubari King. Since they’re so expensive, they’re customarily given as gifts during special occasions.

You might have seen anime beach episodes where characters play a game trying to whack watermelons. That’s because summertime is prime watermelon season. A lot of places that promote the flavor during this time of the year often put it in refreshing cold drinks and other cold desserts like sorbets. Sometimes summer snacks forgo the flavor entirely and only use the watermelon’s bright red and green colors to symbolize the season.

Throughout the year, certain businesses may have seasonal promotions known as “fairs” (フェア). During these events, restaurants at department stores and malls offer special menu items with a specific ingredient or theme. During summer, some of these fairs push for dishes and products that have tomatoes. While tomatoes are available year-round, summer’s tomatoes have the best flavor and go well with many cool dishes to combat the hot weather. Salads, pastas, and even cold ramen are frequent summertime tomato pairings.

Since we’re talking about summer’s high temps, there’s nothing like kakigōri (かき氷) to beat the heat. Although kakigōri isn’t a specific flavor, this Japanese shaved ice dessert becomes even more widely available when the temperatures start to rise. Summer festival stalls will often serve kakigōri with a variety of syrups for different taste preferences, but specialty stores have introduced all kinds of combinations, from fresh fruit toppings to more traditional Japanese flavors. Nowadays it’s possible to find kakigōri during other times of the year, but they’re still most prevalent during the hotter months.

Japanese peaches also start to show up on menus and at stores throughout summer and all the way to the start of fall. Because of their flavor profile, peaches can be found in sweet and savory dishes alike. Similar to muskmelons, some Japanese peaches like the Okayama Shimizu Hakuto come with a hefty price tag at specialty fruit stores due to their sweetness. But again, there are plenty of affordable types found at supermarkets, and special menus incorporate them in creative ways so it’s possible to try them without going over budget.

This final flavor on the list is a bit of an anomaly. Most citrus in Japan become widely available during the winter months, but lemons are grown year-round and Setouchi Lemons from western Japan are commonly used for summer gentei products. This variety of yellow lemons aren’t as acidic as others and their refreshing flavor works well for summertime snacks and desserts. They can be found on many special menus as well as seasonal products available at stores.

Whether you’re visiting Japan for a short time or recently moved to the country, keep an eye out for items marked as “gentei” at stores and restaurants. It’s a wonderful way to try new flavors and experience what the current season has to offer, not just the ones we’ve listed here. And of course “gentei” doesn’t just apply to food and drinks. Scents, designs, and other goods make use of these seasonal promotions as well. Because of their limited availability, seasonal merch make for great gifts and souvenirs because they’re so unique!

New Expansion Skin Parts:
The included New Expansion Skin Parts are an updated version of the Expansion Skin Parts designed to allow female-body style Anothers to be combined with non-mechanical character models more easily. While Principal is used as the base kit, approximately 50% of the model has been converted to use skin parts, including the joints and exterior. The model uses Skin Color D and can be combined with models such as Sousai Shoujo Teien’s Training Wolf.
A version without the armor details on the shoulder blades is included.

Naked Face Part:
This kit includes two types of pre-painted face parts with movable eyes. The face parts use tampography and the eyes use UV printing, meaning a near-perfect finish can be achieved with assembly alone.
The eyes can be adjusted to look different ways using the included tool.

Hairstyle:
The hairstyle combines the rear head parts from Sousai Shoujo Teien’s After School Short Wig Type: A with Little Devil Twin Tails’ bangs. Three interchangeable bangs are included: Standard, Glasses-Compatible, and a 3mm Connector Type for attaching items such as a Megalomaria visor. Customize to match a variety of scenes and scenarios!
The color used is the same white as Training Wolf, so they can be freely combined as well.
*This kit includes only a non-mechanical head part.*

Articulation Features:
Despite the change in appearance, the body’s approximately 50 points of articulation remain unchanged. The knee joint is comprised of a single layer of joints and can be bent inward enough to allow the model to sit with one knee up.
The knee armor can move independently and be adjusted to the desired position. The shoulders are composed of multiple joints and can be pulled forward to recreate a crossed arms pose.
The range of movement around the shoulders also supports a range of poses such as dynamic full body action poses and two-handed sword stances.
The torso part has an excellent range of motion, allowing for lying down poses. The neck can move in all directions, allowing the head to be turned away.
The elbows have a deep bend that makes charming poses like putting a hand on the cheek possible.
The hip joints can move independently in all directions, allowing stretching and split poses. A wide range of poses is possible, from high kicks to sitting curled up!
For the rear armor, there is also a single-piece version that is not separated into left and right parts that can be used freely.

Three-point Wrist Joints:
The wrists are designed to bend inwards almost 180 degrees, allowing their hard points to be brought forward.
Combining the model with separately sold weapon units can turn the arms into weapons for a monster-like appearance. The standard wrist joints and spacer can also be used freely.

Hands:
In addition to the standard array of hands, a color variation set of hand parts from Megalomaria M.S.G Ex Hand Unit [Female Type A] is also included, for a total of 14 different types.
A wide range of hand parts are included, from the Closed Hands and Open Hands essential for powerful standing and action poses to expressive parts such as Peace Sign and Hand Seal.
The hands are molded in the same brown as Ruby Eye’s hand parts.

Compatibility of Head and Naked Face Parts:
The Naked Face is compatible with female-body style Anothers’ masks and Sousai Shojo Teien face parts. Additionally, the bangs are compatible with the visor parts from female Anothers and the bangs from Sousai Shojo Teien models, allowing for a combination of non-mechanical and mecha designs. The neck's ball joint is 5mm in diameter and can be combined with other series, and a 6mm ball joint can be used for combinations with Megami Device head parts.

Combat Knife and Goggles:
A clear red combat knife and goggles are included.
The goggles can be attached to the Glasses-Compatible bangs.

Heaven's Lost Property Final the Movie: Eternally My Master Ikaros 1/6 Scale Figure (Re-run)

From the hugely popular series Heaven’s Lost Property, the cute airhead Ikaros makes her debut under the 4-Leaves label! The fan-favorite character, who took the top spot twice in product request surveys, is finally brought to life as a figure.

With slightly parted lips as if trying to convey something, pure eyes gazing ahead, and a hand gently extended, the innocent, angelic presence captivates all who see it. By placing the included watermelon beneath the hand, the scene instantly changes into a soft, heartwarming moment of gently patting the watermelon, creating a truly Ikaros-like pose. From the beautifully contoured and supple body line to the intricately sculpted twin tails adorned with crossing ribbons, and the pearl-coated, elegant wings, this figure is filled with highlights throughout.

As with Nymph from the same label, a cushion base to protect the figure is included. In addition, the figure was meticulously produced with a strong focus on matching the scale based on Nymph’s original sculpt size. Those who own Nymph should definitely try displaying the two side by side!
