Imagine this: fluffy slices of bread filled to the brim with the sweet whipped cream and colorful fruits! These treats definitely aren't new, but they’ve suddenly exploded in popularity again. Do you know what they are? Fruit sandwiches!

Fruit sandwiches aren't the savory ones that you’re probably used to having for lunch. Instead of regular ingredients like ham, lettuce, or chicken, they’re filled with sweet things like fresh cream, strawberries, or even slices of kiwifruit. As a result, they're seen more as sweets and eaten as a snack.

And guess what? These adorable sandwiches are actually a Japanese invention! Though we don’t have all the details, they are said to have been invented sometime between the Taisho era (1912-1926) and the beginning of the Showa period (1926-1989). Nowadays they’re readily available in convenience stores, bakeries, and retro Japanese-style coffee shops (喫茶店, kissaten). Traditional and familiar to many, they’re a cheap and easy way to experience an older Japan without going too far!

You may think, "Hold on, a fruit sandwich?" Not to worry, though; since sliced bread in Japan generally has a fine grain and is super soft and fluffy, it’s perfect to be eaten with sweet flavors!

A new term that caught Japan by storm a few years ago was "moe-dan" (萌え断), meaning “beautiful and colorful cross-sections of food”. Just giving the Japanese hashtag #萌え断 a search on Instagram will bring up over 200,000 results of beautiful food. Perhaps fruit sandwiches can thank social media for their comeback, seeing as they're the epitome of moe-dan.

Recently, sandwiches are even being made to make the fruits and cream look like flowers in the cross-sections. With more and more people putting together artistic sandwiches, just scrolling through the pictures can be really fun!

Try making your own with our basic fruit sandwich recipe!

Here's an important tip: Choose fruits that don’t contain too much moisture, because those with too much juice will make your sandwich all soggy. However, most kinds of fruit are OK, so go ahead and choose your favorites. We recommend fruits like strawberries, kiwis, bananas, papaya, and pineapple.

This time we’ll be making a fruit sandwich staple: a strawberry sandwich!

Ingredients (Serves 2)
・4 slices of sandwich bread
・Strawberries (as many as you think necessary)
・1 pack of fresh cream (200ml)
・20g sugar (adjust if needed)

Instructions

1. Prep the strawberries
Cut the top off washed strawberries.

2. Make the whipped cream
Add fresh cream and sugar into a bowl. Whisk it until it forms stiff peaks.
(Tip: Place the bowl over ice or cold water to chill it while whisking. This will speed up the process and give the cream more volume.)

3. Spread the cream on the bread
Spread out some cling wrap. Make sure that it is enough to comfortably wrap your entire finished sandwich. Place one slice of bread on the cling wrap. Slather a thick layer of cream on it, filling in the corners and the sides.

4. Arrange the strawberries
While arranging the strawberries, keep in mind how the cross-section of the sandwich will look. On top of them, spread another layer of fresh cream (make sure to cover all of the strawberries!). Place the other slice of bread on top. Do the same for the other 2 slices of bread.

5. Wrap your sandwiches in cling wrap and pop them in the fridge
Using the cling wrap under the sandwiches, make sure to wrap each sandwich properly. Then, put them into the fridge so they'll hold their shape.

Once they're properly chilled, you can cut them open and snap away to your heart’s content!

Not quite cakes and not quite meals either, fruit sandwiches are definitely in a league of their own. You can buy them just about anywhere in Japan, so be sure to visit someday to sample these treats at their birthplace!

Kyoto Animation's upcoming Free! film is now set for release in two parts as Free! The Movie -the Final Stroke-!

The first part will open on September 17, 2021, and the second part will open on April 22, 2022.

A teaser visual and trailer have been released in addition to staff and cast details.

Nobunaga Shimazaki is set to reprise his role as Haruka Nanase. Eisaku Kawanami will also return to direct and Kyoto Animation will once again animate the film.

Inspired by Oji Koji’s light novel series High Speed, Free! follows the everyday lives of a group of boys who revive their high school's swimming club. Kyoto Animation's anime adaptation began in 2013 with a TV anime series. In addition to three anime seasons, three compilation films and one original film have been released.

Free! The Movie -the Final Stroke- Part 1 will open on September 17, 2021, followed by Part 2 on April 22, 2022.

Created by Tatsuki Fujimoto (藤本タツキ, Fujimoto Tatsuki), Chainsaw Man (チェンソーマン, Chensōman) is an action manga that was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from December 2018 and ended in December 2020.

Centered around a destitute boy who becomes part chainsaw after a run-in with a devil, the series has gained acclaim from Japanese and overseas fans alike for its unique brand of craziness and dark take on the world of shonen manga. It's also been recognized as the year's best manga in its category by two separate organizations.

Story

In a world where devils (monsters born of human fears) roam society and terrorize humans, an unfortunate young man named Denji works as a devil hunter to pay off his dead father's debts. One day, he is killed by a devil, having fallen victim to a yakuza plot. However, his death fulfills a contract with his devil dog Pochita, thus transforming him into Chainsaw Man. Now that he is part devil, Denji must hunt devils as part of a government team to escape being targeted himself.

Characters

Denji (デンジ)

A young devil hunter who died and came back to life as a human-devil hybrid with the help of his former pet dog, a Chainsaw Devil named Pochita. His chainsaw form can be activated by pulling the cord on his chest. Denji is no stranger to hardship; before his transformation and new position as a Public Safety Devil Hunter, he had also resorted to selling some of his own organs to repay part of his father’s debts. Nevertheless, as a self-proclaimed 16 year old, he maintains some simple desires in life, like spreading jam on bread and eating it, as well as sleeping with a girl before he dies.

Pochita (ポチタ)

A Chainsaw Devil who first takes the form of a cute little dog (albeit with a chainsaw sticking out of his head). After suffering terrible injuries, he meets Denji, who saves Pochita’s life by providing him with blood to drink. Having become attached to the boy and his dreams of a normal life, Pochita later returns the favor by bringing Denji back to life and merging with him to become Chainsaw Man.

Makima (マキマ)

A mysterious Public Safety Devil Hunter who leads the special Division 4 squad and recruits Denji, also taking him to be her “pet.” In addition to her combat abilities as a devil hunter, she is highly intelligent and calculating, often manipulating Denji with kindness and threats in equal measure.

Aki Hayakawa (早川アキ, Hayakawa Aki)

A Public Safety Devil Hunter in Makima’s squad. Despite his desire for revenge against the devil who killed his family, he is a rational young man who truly cares about his comrades. After Denji is recruited, they begin to live together under Makima’s orders. He is partnered with Himeno.

Power (パワー, Pawā)

A Public Safety Devil Hunter in Makima’s squad. Despite her appearance as a pink-haired young woman, she is actually a powerful Blood Fiend. Aggressive and selfish, she nevertheless finds it in herself to become true friends with Denji and Aki.

Himeno (姫野)

A Public Safety Devil Hunter in Makima’s squad. Calm and collected, she has vast experience hunting demons, which has also given her a certain pessimism about the occupation, as well as her own work. She is partnered with Aki, who she has known since he was a rookie devil hunter.

Hirokazu Arai (荒井ヒロカズ, Arai Hirokazu)

A rookie Public Safety Devil Hunter in Makima’s squad. He has received training from Himeno. While he does not trust devils and fiends, he cares for his teammates and is earnest about his job. He is partnered with Kobeni.

Kobeni Higashiyama (東山コベニ, Higashiyama Kobeni)

A rookie Public Safety Devil Hunter in Makima’s squad. Despite her occupation, she openly shows extreme fear when faced with devils and general danger. She is partnered with Arai.

Beings born from humans’ fears of just about anything, from physical objects like guns to creatures and concepts. Upon coming into existence, they take on the name of the thing that is feared and generally display related abilities and physical features. A devil’s power depends on how much their namesake is feared, meaning some are weak enough to be defeated by ordinary human weapons, while others require the skills of experienced hunters. Overall, however, they are more difficult to kill than humans because they are able to heal injuries by drinking blood, human or otherwise.

Humans who work to exterminate devils and protect other humans. In Japan, they are either affiliated with the government (Public Safety) or act as bounty hunters or mercenaries (Private Sector).

– Fiend (魔人, majin)

Devils who have possessed human corpses. A fiend’s abilities are much weaker than that of the original devil, so they are usually born of an attempt to escape imminent death.

Devils are able to make contracts with humans, in which both parties exchange something. For example, a devil might allow a human to use their devil abilities in return for a part of the human’s body, their senses, or even a portion of their lifespan. Devils may make contracts with any amount of people and with any terms, as long as both sides agree for each contract.

The first part of Chainsaw Man, “Public Safety arc” (公安編, Kōan-hen) began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump from December 2018 and ended in December 2020, going on to win the 66th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen category. It was also named as the top manga of 2021 in the men's category of the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! (meaning "this manga is amazing!") ranking.

The first arc has been published in 11 volumes, currently available in North America through Viz in both physical and digital versions. Overseas fans can also read it online through Shueisha’s Manga Plus website and app.

A second part is slated to run in online magazine Shonen Jump+.

MAPPA is set to produce a TV anime adaptation of Chainsaw Man. While details on casting, staff and the broadcast date are yet to be announced, an official website has been launched with the rather fitting URL of https://chainsawman.dog/.

Original author Tatsuki Fujimoto has also expressed his eagerness with plenty of excitement and humor, commenting that he couldn't believe that the studio behind Dorohedoro and Jujutsu Kaisen, would be producing Chainsaw Man despite it being "like a copy" of the aforementioned manga.

At the moment there are no trailers that feature actual scenes, so for now, get hyped to meet Denji and the crew in anime form with this bizarrely addictive promo video!

Saudi Arabian-Japanese anime film The Journey has released a new Japanese trailer!

Produced by Japan’s Toei Animation and Saudi Arabia’s Manga Productions, The Journey is Saudi Arabia's first feature-length anime film.

The story follows Aws, a potter in ancient Arabia who must battle to protect his home city of Mecca and those he loves from an invasion.

The Japanese cast includes prominent voice actors like Toru Furuya, Kotone Mitsuishi, Hiroshi Kamiya, Yuichi Nakamura, Kazuya Nakai, and Takuya Kuroda.

The Journey is slated to open in Tokyo and Osaka on June 25.

Slice-of-life manga Laid-Back Camp is coming to Nintendo Switch and PS4 on Sept. 30 with a new game titled Yuru Camp△ Have a nice day!

It will be available in both standard and limited editions. The limited edition set will include a Choro-Q pullback toy of Rin Shima on her scooter, as well as a soundtrack CD.

Originally a manga by Afro, Laid-Back Camp follows a group of high school girls who love to go camping. While it has previously been adapted into a virtual reality video game that launched in March 2021, Yuru Camp△ Have a nice day! is the franchise's first console game.

Fantasy anime Restaurant to Another World will be back for second helpings with Season 2 now confirmed!

The main cast members are set to reprise their roles, with Junichi Suwabe as the Master, Sumire Uesaka as Aletta, and Saori Onishi as Kuro.

Masato Jinbo will return as director and to supervise scripts. Meanwhile, Yasukazu Shoji will take over as character designer and OLM is set to animate the series in place of Silver Link.

In addition to a teaser visual, character visuals for Aletta and Kuro have also been released. Further details including broadcast date will be announced at a later date.

Adapted from Junpei Inuzuka’s light novel series, the show revolves around the Western Restaurant Nekoya, a seemingly normal restaurant which becomes a mysterious portal to another world every Saturday. On these occasions, all sorts of guests from across the way are invited to taste the restaurant's exotic cuisine.

The first season of the TV anime adaptation aired from July to September 2017 with 12 episodes.

Upcoming live action movie Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning has released a series of new stills!

The stills feature Kenshin (Takeru Satoh), his wife Tomoe Yukishiro (Kasumi Arimura), Kogoro Katsura (Issey Takahashi), Soji Okita (Nijiro Murakami), and Hajime Saito (Yosuke Eguchi).

The Beginning is the fifth and final installment of the live action film series, acting as a prequel outlining Kenshin’s past and exploring how he got his iconic scar while working as an assassin under Katsura Kogoro. It will follow The Final, which adapts the Jinchu arc of the manga as the conclusion to the main story.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final opens at cinemas across Japan on April 23, 2021, with The Beginning following on June 4, 2021.

The TV anime "Betterman", aired in 1999, is set in the same universe as "The King of Braves GaoGaiGar". Its characters also appear in "Hakaiou -GaoGaiGar vs Betterman-".
When the anime was produced, sculptor Kenji Andou created one single concept model to use as a reference to animate the work.
This impressive one-of-a-kind model, a little different from the design featured in the anime, received a big response while the anime was airing, but it was then put away and didn't see the light of day for 20 years.
However, a miracle happened: AMAKUNI is going to turn the model into a PVC figure!

You can display it together with "AMAKUNI KIZIN Genesic GaoGaiGar", "AMAKUNI KIZIN Genesic GaoGaiGar Option Parts Set", also available for pre-order at the same time, to recreate a confrontation scene like in "Hakaiou -GaoGaiGar vs Betterman-"!

The highly detailed Revali PVC statue is inspired by his official artwork from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Revali is in this stoic pose wielding the Great Eagle Bow, which has a slightly elastic bowstring. As one of the four Champions of Hyrule, he dons the blue cloth bestowed upon them by Princess Zelda as a symbol that they are, indeed, Champions of Hyrule. And given the direction of where the cloth is blowing, it even adds a certain dynamism to the piece.

The design on the base is based on the Sheikah tribe's eye symbol that appears when activating the Sheikah Slate interface, and the Collector's Edition of this statue comes with bright LED functions for the base.
